Governance
The Irish Historic Flight Foundation is guided by a voluntary Board of Directors with deep experience across all levels of aviation, engineering and leadership. The Board provides strategic oversight for the Foundation, helping to ensure that Ireland’s aviation heritage is preserved, operated and shared in a safe, responsible and sustainable way.
Our governance approach reflects the responsibility that comes with caring for historic aircraft. These aircraft are not static exhibits; they are living pieces of Ireland’s aviation story. Keeping them active requires careful planning, specialist expertise, strong safety standards and a shared commitment to public benefit.
Board Responsibilities
- Set the Foundation’s long-term direction, including priorities for aircraft, infrastructure, education, public engagement and future talent development.
- Satisfy itself that appropriate arrangements are in place to support the safe and responsible operation of the Foundation’s aircraft and compliance with applicable aviation regulations
- Support funding, partnerships and community relationships that strengthen the Foundation’s future.
- Promote transparency, accountability and good stewardship across all Foundation activities.
A Word from Our Chair
I am proud to serve as Chair of the Irish Historic Flight Foundation and to support an organisation that brings Ireland’s aviation heritage to life through the preservation and operation of historic aircraft that continue to inspire, educate and engage the public. Since our establishment in 2014, the Foundation has been built on the dedication of unpaid volunteers, industry partners and aviation professionals who share a common belief that Ireland’s aviation heritage should remain active, visible and relevant.
Unlike many aviation museums, our aircraft are not simply preserved for display. Where appropriate and practical, they continue to fly, connecting today’s audiences with the people, technology and stories that shaped Irish aviation. Maintaining that capability requires specialist expertise, committed volunteers and the careful stewardship needed to preserve these remarkable aircraft for future generations.
Good governance is central to achieving that purpose. The Board provides strategic leadership, oversees the Foundation’s approach to safety and regulatory compliance, and supports its long-term sustainability. Preserving and operating historic aircraft carries significant responsibility, and we approach that responsibility with professionalism, transparency and care.
The IHFF is more than a collection of aircraft. It is a living platform for education, skills development and public engagement. By combining authentic aviation heritage with hands-on learning and strong industry experience, we aim to encourage curiosity in young people, foster an interest in engineering and aviation, and inspire the next generation of Irish aviation talent.
